 Become a Fly Fishing Guide in Colorado

Want to become a fly fishing guide and run guided float fishing trips in Colorado? Kirk’s Oar Certification and Colorado fly fishing guide school consists of 5 days of learning from a certified instructor. At the end of the course, each participant will be certified to run guided fly fishing float trips in the State of Colorado. The class covers how to row and navigate a river as well as how to fish with clients from a boat. This will include up to 50 hours of rowing time with an instructor. Our class also consists of time on the lake learning to run and operate a motor-powered boat. Students will learn basic maintenance and navigation along with fishing tactics for lake species and how to operate tools such as sonar.

PRICE: $1600 PER PERSON | 5 DAYS

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

  • Fishing license

  • Must be over the age of 16

  • Bring extra clothes (in case of weather)

  • Any fishing gear that you would normally use

WHAT WE PROVIDE:

  • All necessary class materials

  • Rafts and all necessary equipment

  • Transportation to and from the river

  • Lunches will be provided everyday during the course

Colorado Fly Fishing Guide School

First Aid and CPR training class will be offered the Saturday following the course for those who need be certified or renew. Current CPR and First Aid cards are required to guide in Colorado.

The Division of Parks and Wildlife regulates outfitter licensing and commercial boating on public rivers throughout the state of Colorado. All students must successfully complete the following required training elements to obtain river guide qualification.

  • River Currents, Eddies, and Waves
  • River Hazards
  • Types & Causes of River Rapids
  • Scouting & Running Rapids
  • River Rescue & Emergency Procedures
  • Minimizing Outdoor Recreation Resource Impacts
  • Proper Fit, Wearing & Use of Personal Floatation Device (PFD)

Need to Know

Lodging is not included but we do have lodging discounts available for students. There are also opportunities for camping close by.
