Hiking

If you are like most Coloradoans, you love hiking, no matter what time of year it is. But hiking in the fall can really take your breath away. While summer hiking can provide you with great views, beautiful weather, and endless fields of green, fall hiking takes it all to the next level. While hiking in the fall, you will be blown away by the pops of bright, warm colors among the dark greens of evergreen trees. Aspen trees often give off the best colors, adding golden yellow flashes to an already beautiful landscape.

Plus, you don’t have to worry about hiking through extreme heat while you walk among the trees in the cool fall weather. The temperature is perfect, the views are breathtaking, and the mountains are waiting to be explored!

Elk Bugling

While some people may not know what elk bugling is, it is a favorite fall activity for many Colorado natives. The fall months are the elk breeding season, which means that they gather by the hundreds in areas where people can stand back and watch these magnificent beasts. During this time, you can hear male elks bugling throughout the day, but mostly in the early morning and later in the evening. The bugles sound like high-pitched squeals that echo through the autumn-colored trees. Each bull has distinct sounds in their bugle, which can be fun to listen for while enjoying this activity with your family.

When you go to watch the elk bugle, we recommend bringing some jackets, a few snacks, chairs, and binoculars to get a better view of the elk! Remember, these are wild animals and you are coming into their home, do not get too close to elk and do not bother them or any other animal in any way. This is a calm and relaxing activity, most people talk in a whisper as to not miss one of the bugles the comes from the herd and to not disrupt the elk in their natural habitat.

Fishing Trip

While many people think that fishing is great in the summer months, fall is actually a great time for fishing, especially fly fishing!
